Tesco holds quarter of UK grocer market share

Tesco holds over a quarter of UK grocery market share, according to new research.

A study by Kantar, which assessed all 10 major supermarkets – Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Co-op, Morrisons, Ocado, Asda, and Iceland -- as well as ‘other outlets’ and independents, found that Tesco led the pack in the 12 weeks to 19 March.

Sainsburys and Asda came in second and third place respectively, with each accounting for 14 to 15 per cent of market share.

Ocado was the lowest-ranked major supermarket, with less than two per cent of market share.

In contrast to Kantar’s findings, recent research by the Grocer put Sainsburys in first place with the ‘cheapest basket’ at £72.35 throughout a similar time period. Asda came in second place and Tesco in fifth in the Grocer’s analysis of Sainsburys, Iceland, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, and Tesco.

In February, food inflation hit 18 per cent.

“Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices are running at record levels – up 18.2 per cent year on year – the highest observed for over 45 years,” said a partner at consultancy McKinsey.
