Waitrose has implemented AI-powered technology to optimise its delivery routes to make them more convenient for customers and improve the environmental impact.
The grocery retailer has partnered with technology firm Satalia to roll out the new technology.
Waitrose said the tool can better plan delivery schedules, reduce travel times, and minimise fuel consumption across its fleet.
The platform provides the retailer with real-time optimisation, taking into account variables such as traffic conditions, vehicle capacity, and delivery time windows.
Waitrose said that customers will benefit from more accurate delivery slots and a more reliable service, whilst the overall carbon footprint of the network is significantly reduced.
Since introducing the solution, Waitrose seen measurable improvements across key operational metrics, including an eight per cent reduction in delivery milage and a 12 per cent increase in drops per route.
In addition to a gain in “on-the-road" efficiency, Waitrose said customer delivery slot availability has increased by four per cent despite increasing delivery volume.
The platform is now live across Waitrose’s network of 170 stores, two customer fulfilment centres and a fleet of 1,400 vans.
“By harnessing AI-powered technology, we can now offer customers more precise and convenient delivery times while significantly reducing our environmental impact,” said Pav Kalia head of change delivery and technology at Waitrose. “This is a brilliant example of how technology can help us deliver on our promises of both exceptional service and sustainability.”
