Waitrose launches AI tool to improve delivery route efficiency

Waitrose has announced the implementation of AI-powered technology to optimise its delivery routes, aiming to make them more convenient for customers while reducing environmental impact.

The grocery retailer has partnered with technology firm Satalia to roll out the new system.

Waitrose said the tool can improve delivery planning, reduce travel times and minimise fuel consumption across its fleet.

The platform provides real-time optimisation, taking into account variables such as traffic conditions, vehicle capacity and delivery time windows.

Waitrose said customers will benefit from more accurate delivery slots and a more reliable service, while the overall carbon footprint of the network is reduced.

Since introducing the solution, Waitrose has seen measurable improvements across several operational metrics, including an eight per cent reduction in delivery mileage and a 12 per cent increase in drops per route.

In addition to gains in “on-the-road” efficiency, Waitrose said customer delivery slot availability has increased by four per cent despite rising delivery volumes.

The platform is now live across Waitrose’s network of 170 stores, two customer fulfilment centres and a fleet of 1,400 vans.

“By harnessing AI-powered technology, we can now offer customers more precise and convenient delivery times while significantly reducing our environmental impact,” said Pav Kalia, head of change delivery and technology at Waitrose.

“This is a strong example of how technology can help us deliver both exceptional service and sustainability.”
