Ikea will launch spare parts business to extend product life

Ikea has revealed plans to launch an online ordering system that will sell spare parts to prolong the life of its products.

The move, first revealed by the Financial Times, is reportedly part of the Swedish furniture conglomerate’s sustainability push towards a circular business that sees its products either re-used, refurbished or recycled.

The newspaper said that the ready-to-assemble furniture business has already begun trials of selling second-hand furniture, alongside buying back old goods, and leasing office and home equipment.

It added that last year the company dished out around 14 million spare parts, but has now established an online ordering system that will be available worldwide later in 2021.

“To prolong the life of products, a key aspect is to have spare parts. So that you can upgrade things such as buy new covers or legs for a sofa . . . We are testing a lot,” Lena Pripp-Kovac, chief sustainability officer at Inter Ikea, told the Financial Times.
