Primark has revealed that it is on course to have all its clothing made from recycled or more sustainably sourced materials by 2030.
According to the retailer’s latest Sustainability and Ethics report, which spans the period from 1 August 2022 to 31 July 2023, 55 per cent of its clothing contained recycled or more sustainably sourced materials in 2023 – up from 45 per cent in 2022.
The report also indicated that 46 per cent of the retailer’s cotton clothing contained cotton that was organic, recycled, or from its Primark Sustainable Cotton Programme (PSCP).
PSCP was launched in 2013 to “understand and reduce” the environmental impact of Primark’s cotton and support the livelihoods of cotton farmers.
Additional product commitments for Primark were outlined, in including to strengthen to durability of its clothing by 2025 and to make all clothing “recyclable by design” by 2027.
The report also stated that up to 70 per cent of Primark’s stores are now powered by renewable or low-carbon energy.
“It’s not just customers to whom environmental and social concerns are becoming increasingly front of mind; stakeholders, investors and legislators are all looking at our industry as well,” said Primark chief executive Paul Marchant. “For Primark, this year, we’ve been reflecting on our role within this.”
Marchant added that Primark would continue to collaborate more and build upon its existing partnerships and that relationships with its suppliers remained central to its plans to drive wider change.
Primark recently recorded a 15 per cent profit spike to £9 billion in its full financial year ended 16 September.
