SPAR partners with FoodTech company to reduce food waste

Food retailer SPAR has announced a partnership with food technology company Whywaste to reduce food wastage.

Whywaste offers a variety of services including a digital date-checking app which identifies and keeps track of product about to expire. The company says that this allows retailers to take action and make sure these products are sold rather than wasted.

The food retailer said that stores already using Whywaste’s technology have seen food waste reduced by up to 40 per cent.

Tom Rose, head of international operations at SPAR International said: “At SPAR International we are always looking for new and innovative ways to meet the needs of our customers, which is why our partnership with Whywaste, an end-to-end digital solution for food waste in retail, is an ideal fit for us. Technology to support the green agenda is becoming a permanent fixture in retail and SPAR International is wholeheartedly behind this trend.”

Spar has previously partnered with Too Good To Go and Gander to help reduce food waste.

One of the UN’s sustainable development goals is to halve food waste by 2030. According to the UN, almost a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted.
