Klarna launches environmental impact metrics in app

Klarna has launched 'conscious badges' in its app to convey the environmental impact of products and brands.

The new feature allows users of the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) provider to access metrics about their brand purchases, including information on greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of energy derived from renewable sources throughout the manufacturing process.

The introduction of the badges follows Klarna’s Conscious Collections initiative and its findings that over half of shoppers want more information about the environmental impact of the brands and products they purchase.

Electronics brands can earn up to five badges, including ‘disclosing greenhouse gas emissions’, ‘committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions’, and ‘using renewable energy’.

The badges are part of a collaboration with sustainability platform Clarity AI.

Salah Said, head of sustainability at Klarna commented: “The rollout of conscious badges in the Klarna App marks a significant milestone in our continued effort to empower shoppers to vote with their wallets.”

He continued: “Following the successful launch of ‘Conscious Collections’ in the Klarna App last year to bring greater awareness to environmentally and ethically friendly brands within the apparel and footwear verticals, we are thrilled to team up with Clarity AI to deliver the worlds’ first unbiased, AI-driven environmental assessment for electronics brands.”
