Carrefour launches new pop-up store concept in Belgium

France-headquartered retail giant Carrefour has opened its first mobile pop-up store at a Christmas market in Brussels.

‘The Box’ is a temporary store made up of modular containers which the company said are quick and easy to install.

The two-storey shop, which is under 50 m², has been designed to maximise space with groceries available on the ground floor and a customer cafe on the top floor.

Starting from next year, Carrefour said that The Box will also appear at other busy locations in Belgium, such as festivals and other major events.

In keeping with the Christmas market’s theme of solidarity, Carrefour is also organising a toy collection at The Box. These will be distributed to four Brussels hospitals and a care home for children.

Additionally, Carrefour said customers will be able to round up their spend to the next euro, with the difference donated to the Christmas market’s charities.

Separately, Carrefour also announced that that from 18 January 2026, Carrefour Belgium will now open 40 of its existing hypermarkets and 43 supermarkets on Sundays.

The company said that more people want to do their shopping on a Sunday, with the move allowing customers to access Carrefour products seven days a week.

The decision follows several months of negotiations with unions.
A key condition is that employees can choose whether they want to work on Sunday, which Carrefour said will ensure a work-life balance and enable employees to benefit from extra Sunday shifts.
