Carphone Warehouse closes all Irish stores

Dixons Carphone has announced the closure of all 81 Carphone Warehouse stores in Ireland.

The company said that the closure of Carphone Warehouse Ireland is a necessary step in its mobile transformation plans.

The move follows a decision to close all standalone Carphone Warehouse stores in the UK last year.

69 standalone and 12 stores-within-a-store have now closed their doors in Ireland.

Dixons Carphone said that all impacted employees would be supported.

“Today’s announcement is a necessary step in Dixons Carphone’s mobile transformation,” said Dixons Carphone in a statement. “The company is making good progress on this and will launch its exciting new mobile proposition in the UK later this year, offering customers flexibility, transparency, and value.”

Over the past year, Carphone Warehouse Ireland has seen a decline in footfall in excess of 30 per cent, with a 25 per cent increase in customers buying sim free handsets.

“Customers are changing the way they buy mobile devices and connectivity, replacing their handsets less often and buying them separately or as part of more flexible bundles,” said the retailer. “Customers are also increasingly choosing to shop with the retailer’s large and growing online business or through Currys PC World stores, where customers can see, touch and play with a wider range of technology, access services as well as products, receive trusted independent advice from thousands of expert colleagues, and repair and recycle products, all in one place.”

The company had expected consumer behaviour changes but had not anticipated how quickly they would take place. It attributed the acceleration of these shopping trends to the pandemic.
