Asda rolls out HR tech as part of digital transformation

Asda has implemented several new HR technologies, covering absences, benefits, learning, recruitment, capital management, compensation, and analytics as part of its digital transformation plans.

The technology, provided by cloud application for finance and HR company Workday, is designed to enable the supermarket brand to offer personalised employee experiences and gain a unified view of its 140,000-strong workforce.

Asda was brought back into British ownership by Mohsin and Zuber Issa and TDR Capital in February last year.

“We want to inspire and enable our colleagues,” said Hayley Tatum, chief people officer, Asda. “Workday will provide employees with the tools to learn and develop new skills relevant to their roles, while helping us to sharpen team and business performance.

"Workday’s agile technology architecture means that we’ll be able to take on tomorrow’s challenges, helping to ensure that our colleagues have the support they need.”

The technology will enable Asda to access a single system for its employees to track and manage their time off, give managers a view of workers’ absence plans, and deliver personalised training content for the Asda workforce.

Workday said that the tech also brings together people data with third-party data from different formats, such as point of sale, and surveys to gain access into insights.

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
