Co-op to roll out new employee communication hardware across its nationwide stores

Convenience store chain Co-op is set to overhaul how its employees communicate with each other with comms tech to be used by the retailer across the country.

VoCo Vo, a retail communications specialist, will supply its new Series 5 (S5) Pro headset across Co-op’s 2,300 stores nationwide. The retailer previously trialled the hardware in 114 locations and, following a successful pilot, began a chain-wide rollout in February 2026. The deployment is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and is part of a five-year partnership between the retailer and VoCo Vo.

David Tyas, head of retail support centre and innovation at Co-op, said: “Following the trials, we are confident the S5 Pro headsets will simplify everyday tasks for colleagues, strengthen communication and support our focus on ensuring a safe and enjoyable shopping environment for everybody, all while helping us deliver an even better experience for our members and customers.”

Designed specifically for retail environments, the S5 Pro headset features a modular design intended to keep maintenance costs low. It comprises a core module that houses audio components and the battery, a cast module that acts as the “nerve centre” by housing the processor, and a third module that includes user controls and a status light.

Other features include non-detachable buttons for workplace safety, a fully waterproof design, a compact boom arm, easier adjustment for wearers, Tencel material to keep the user cool, dual microphones, improved noise cancellation and faster charging.

According to VoCo Vo, the device is designed to keep users connected at all times, streamline communication and improve safety on the shopfloor. With the headset, Co-op colleagues can quickly contact support and security teams whenever they need assistance.

Use cases include finding information to answer customer questions, checking stock availability, locating customer parcels and calling for security backup if an incident occurs on the shopfloor.

Co-op employees have responded positively to the new headsets. Nine in ten said they prefer the S5 Pro, citing greater comfort, ease of use and better sound quality. Co-op and VoCo Vo have been working together since 2017, with the latest deployment marking the next phase of the partnership.
