Zip rolls out in-store BNPL payments at UK retailers

Zip is rolling out a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) option enabling UK customers to make in-store purchases via tap and pay with a virtual card.

The move is being rolled out nationwide starting with Homebase, The Fragrance Shop, Jollyes - The Pet People, and Hype clothing.

The partnership will enable customers to use BNPL via contactless payments on their mobile.

To use the service, customers will need to use their virtual Zip card in their digital wallet to pay at the checkout.

Research commissioned by the company found that one in five UK adults (21 per cent) have used BNPL in the past 12 months, and 12 per cent of adults under 35 would be more likely to shop in store if a BNPL service was on offer.

The research also found that one in ten (13 per cent) say they plan to use BNPL this Christmas to spread the cost of gifts, with the most common purchases among UK adults being clothing, grooming and electricals.

The most common reasons for using BNPL were the ability to spread the purchase over time (49 per cent), buy items interest-free (35 per cent) and manage cash flow (35 per cent).

Anthony Drury, managing Director at Zip, said: “Using our global platform, we’re bringing Tap and Pay with Zip to the UK, meaning for the first time shoppers can buy now and pay later in-store. The benefit of Tap and Pay is it’s hassle-free. You don’t need a code to use Zip instore, just use our virtual card through any digital wallet.

“Buy Now, Pay Later has become a central part of how we shop for goods and services. Customers can now use Zip both online and in-store as part of the modern retail mix, providing a flexible way to pay, wherever they are.”
