Nike files trademark for downloadable virtual goods

Nike has filed several new trademark applications for ‘downloadable virtual goods.’

The sportswear brand said that it wants to trademark computer programmes featuring footwear, clothing, headwear, eyewear, bags, sports bags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys and accessories for use online and in online virtual worlds, hinting at the company’s first foray into the metaverse.

The metaverse is a new phase of the internet, where 3D virtual spaces are created using technologies like virtual and augmented reality.

Nike is not the only multinational with plans to develop a platform in the metaverse. Last week social media giant Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a new branding that aims to reflect the company’s new focus on developing the metaverse.

Microsoft is also reportedly making plans to develop its own corporate version of the 3D reality.

“Nike is heading to the metaverse,” wrote trademark attorney Josh Gerben in a Tweet. “On October 27th the company filed new trademark applications for Nike, Just do it and the swoosh logo.”
Gerben added: “The filings indicate an intent to make and sell Nike-branded virtual shoes and clothing.”

The company is also waiting on a patent for Cryptokicks, which it will use for NFTs, according to a report by CNBC.
