N Brown hires former Very finance boss as CFO

UK-based online fashion retailer N Brown Group has announced the appointment of industry veteran Dominic Appleton as its new chief financial officer.

Succeeding current finance boss Rachel Izzard, Appleton is set to join on 1 March and join the company’s board following the completion of its FY23 Annual Report and Accounts at the end of May. Izzard will work with the board to handover her role and responsibilities, and is expected to leave the business following Appleton’s assumption of the position.

N Brown Group’s brands include JD Williams, Simply Be and Jacamo.

Appleton joins from spending a decade at The Very Group where he most recently served as group finance director. He has also held chief financial officer roles at bathroom retailer VictoriaPlum.com and footwear maker Hotter Shoes.

Of the new hire, chief executive officer Steve Johnson said: “We are delighted to welcome Dominic to the N Brown team. His considerable expertise and experience gained in consumer businesses, particularly in digital retail and financial services, will make him a key addition to the executive management team.”

Dominic Appleton said: “I’m excited to be joining Steve and the N Brown team next month. I have admired N Brown for some time for their inclusive vision and I’m very much looking forward to supporting the strategic transformation journey of this great business.”

The appointment comes several weeks after Mike Ashley’s Fraser Group increased its stake in N Brown Group to become its second-largest shareholder. It previously bought a 4.54 per cent stake in November 2022, but last month increased that to 17.88 per cent.

Recent weeks have also seen the departure of non-executive director Gill Barr following poor sales in 2022. The company ended 2022 with a 7.6 per cent decrease in revenue to £249.2 million for the fourth quarter.
