Lidl outlines 'priority locations' for new stores

Lidl has published a list of ‘priority locations’ for future store openings having recorded sales growth of £120 million over the past 12 months.

Lidl has opened over 50 new stores in 2022, with a further 15 stores having opened across the country in the past three months.

The news follows the budget supermarket’s announcement that it saw record numbers of new shoppers to its stores in 2022, with figures suggesting that around 1.4 million people switched to Lidl from other more premium supermarkets for cheaper products amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

The retailer, which gained £11 million from customer switchovers in January alone, said that the cost-of-living crisis and consumers’ “refusal” to pay a premium for their groceries from the likes of competitors Waitrose and M&s had been a key factor in its results.

“Our store expansion has been and continues to be unparalleled,” said Lidl’s UK chief development officer Richard Taylor. “Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there’s no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential.”
