Lidl expands real-time self-scan trial to seven stores

Supermarket chain Lidl has expanded its Lidl & Go customer trial to seven of its UK stores after a successful friends and family pilot.

Lidl & Go is a new self-scanning tool offered by the supermarket that allows customers with the Lidl Plus app to scan items as they shop, tracking their spend in real time.

The additional stores are located in Airdrie, Cardiff, Epsom, Glenrothes, Kingston, Guilford and Eastleigh.

“This trial is another step forward in our digital evolution, giving shoppers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop,” said Louise Weise, chief customer officer at Lidl GB. “As we continue to invest in Lidl Plus, our focus remains on making the shopping experience simple and rewarding.

“Whether a customer chooses a traditional checkout, self-service, or the autonomy of self-scanning, our priority is ensuring they have the flexibility to shop on their own terms.”

The trial follows updates to the chain’s Lidl Plus loyalty programme earlier in the week. The company has moved from its system of rewards coupons based on monthly spend thresholds to a points-based model.

While this brings it more closely in line with other major retailers’ schemes, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s, it has received mixed reactions from customers on social media sites

Taking to Reddit to express their dissatisfaction, one user noted that the current system would require shoppers to spend over £600 on double pointed items in order to buy two sirloin steaks with points, while another suggested that the senior management overseeing this decision “should be sacked”.
