Asda online sales double during lockdown

Asda's online sales doubled during the past quarter, as the Coronavirus caused a “structural shift” in customer shopping habits.

The supermarket chain reported a 3.8 per cent jump in like-for-like sales for the three months to 30 June, with online grocery sales spiking during the lockdown period.

In response, Asda increased delivery capacity by 65 per cent, while Click and Collect sales quadrupled for the quarter.

Chief executive Roger Burnley commented: “The pandemic has created a structural shift in customer behaviours towards grocery shopping.

"We have accelerated our online capacity expansion to meet levels we had anticipated reaching in eight years within a matter of weeks and we will continue to expand this offer."

Asda stated that it will expand the delivery trial with Uber Eats to 25 more stores over the next eight weeks.

New figures from Kantar showed that Asda suffered the biggest fall in market share of the four largest UK grocery chains over the 12 weeks to 9 August.
