Apple announces plans to launch online store in Vietnam

Apple has announced plans to launch an online store in Vietnam as part of the iPhone maker’s ongoing ambitions to expand into emerging markets.

The company has been exploring alternative avenues for growth with progress stalling in China, once a booming market for the company. Despite the high price of iPhones historically prohibiting growth in such markets where cheap Android devices dominate, Apple believes that it can tap into opportunities for expansion in markets with a young population and little initial iPhone penetration.

Apple said that its first online store will open in Vietnam on May 18, weeks after opening its first physical retail locations in India, with stores in Mumbai and Delhi.

The company did not say if or when it plans to open physical stores in the country of 100 million people, though Apple has historically used an online launch as a precursor to physical expansion. It launched an online store in India, three years ahead of opening its pair of bricks and mortar stores.

In a translated press release, Deirdre O'Brien, Apple's senior vice president of retail, said: “We are honoured to have the opportunity to expand in Vietnam, and are extremely excited to be able to provide superior Apple care and support to customers with the launch of the Apple Store online."
"With our online store, customers in Vietnam can now explore our wide range of amazing products and services, connect with experienced professionals, and experience the best of Apple like never before.”
