Dutch-Belgian multinational grocery retailer Ahold Delhaize has signed an agreement to divest its 87 Romanian stores to Romanian supermarket company Annabella.
The divestment was a condition set by the Romanian Competition Council (RCC) following Ahold Delhaize’s acquisition of Romanian chain Profi earlier this year.
Of the 87 stores to be divested, 82 are currently operated by Profi, with the remaining five operated by Mega Image, Ahold Delhaize’s other supermarket brand in the Romanian market.
Ahold Delhaize said it expects the transaction to be completed by the end of this year.
In January 2025, Ahold Delhaize completed its acquisition of Romanian retailer Profi Rom Food from MidEuropa for an enterprise value of €1.3 billion.
At the time, the company said that the acquisition would boost its existing business in Romania, where it currently operates around 1,000 stores under the Mega Image banner.
Ahold Delhaize added that the purchase would improve its ability to serve Romanian customers in both urban and rural areas.
Earlier this month, Ahold Delhaize announced it had signed a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) in Europe to support its ambition to reduce emissions associated with electricity consumption to zero by 2035.
The new VPPA relates to a new-to-be-built onshore wind farm in Galaţi County in eastern Romania which is owned by HELLENiQ Renewables, a wholly owned subsidiary of HELLENiQ ENERGY Holdings.
Ahold Delhaize said the wind farm is projected to generate around 309 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity usage of approximately 89,000 Romanian households.
