Tesco employs logistics centre robots

Tesco is using Ocado’s tech partner Swisslog to help roll-out automated robots at its logistics centres across the UK.

According to The Grocer, Swisslog will provide an automated pallet retrieval and storage system, using machines riding on conveyor belts to pick up and drop off products.

This PowerStore system is already being used by Pepsi in the US and Coca-Cola in Australia, while Ocado also uses Swisslog’s AutoStore system in its fulfilment centres in Erith and South East London.

“For Tesco, the system is significantly improving throughput capacity, and compared to their traditional racking, is increasing storage density by up to 60 per cent,” explained Shane Faulkner, UK head of sales at Swisslog. “The solution removes the dependence on replenishment to a pick face, as processes are now automatic.”
