Tesco on track to open 70 express stores including at former Amazon Fresh sites

Tesco has said it is on track to opening more than 70 Express stores before March 2027.

New stores will include five at former Amazon Fresh Sites in London. The sites, which are based in Kensington High Street, Hounslow, Moorgate, Aldgate East and Wembley, will reopen as Tesco Express stores before the summer.

The announcement comes after Britain’s largest supermarket opened 60 new Express stores in 2025.

Tesco said that in 2026 new Express stores are also planned for a wide range of areas and local communities including Bickington (Devon), Pontrhydyrun (Torfaen), Strabane (County Tyrone) and Wallyford (East Lothian).

The retailer is also expanding its large store estate, with two new locations opening in Scotland this year in Pitlochry and Heartlands.

The move follows the opening of two new superstores in Ripon last November and Harrogate in December.

Tesco said its new "low carbon" concept superstore in Harrogate has created around 120 new jobs and has been built using "innovative design, technology and building methods" to reduce its environmental impact.

“As one of the UK’s leading retailers, we support jobs and local economies up and down the UK, and as we grow our store network we’re delighted to have the opportunity to serve even more people, in even more communities," said Nick Johnson, Tesco group property director. “We are hugely excited about the year ahead and looking forward to meeting our customers where they are with great quality, exceptional value and brilliant customer service.”

Last month, Tesco announced plans to trial a new crime reporting platform at 40 of its stores.

The Auror platform, which is already used by several retailers and UK police forces, is designed to make it easier and quicker for colleagues to report security incidents.

The technology brings together all the data and information into a single source to simplify the process for retailers and law enforcement to build, manage, track, and resolve cases faster.
