Primark will open a new store at Wimbledon Quarter, its first new London location in around a decade, with construction due to start in the coming months and opening targeted for late 2026 or early 2027.
The discount fashion chain will take part of the former Debenhams unit on the shopping centre’s ground floor, operating across 24,000 sq ft, according to Wimbledon Quarter. Primark said customers can expect its women’s, men’s and kidswear ranges alongside beauty and homeware.
Timelines vary slightly across statements. Wimbledon Quarter stated plans to open by the end of 2026 or early 2027, while other reports and Primark’s announcement refer to “later this year or early 2027”.
Philippa Nibbs, director of sales for London and the south east at Primark, said: “It’s fantastic to announce our first new store in London as we enter our 40th year in the capital. We’ve had lots of requests over the years to open here so it’s great to finally make it happen.”
Robert Cragg, head of asset management at Romulus, which owns and manages Wimbledon Quarter, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Primark to Wimbledon Quarter. Their arrival is a fantastic boost for the local community and brings greater choice for everyday shopping right to the heart of Wimbledon.”
Toby Sykes, international partner at Cushman & Wakefield, the global commercial real estate services firm advising Romulus on Wimbledon Quarter, said: “Primark further strengthens Wimbledon Quarter’s appeal and diverse retail offering, complementing the other new and upsized retail tenants, including M&S, Oliver Bonas, Hotel Chocolat, Rituals, and So Shell Nails. Primark’s arrival will also successfully complete the repurposing of the former Debenhams department store, alongside Third Space and Fortius, one of Europe’s leading private healthcare providers.”
The addition supports the centre’s recent push to broaden food, fitness, leisure and workspace options, according to Romulus. Local alternatives for Wimbledon shoppers currently include Primark stores in Wandsworth’s Southside Shopping Centre, on Mitcham Road in Tooting, and in the centre of nearby commuter town Kingston.
Store footprint figures differ by source. Primark operates 11 sites across London, including two on Oxford Street and one each in Westfield London, along with 30 stores within the M25, reflecting the wider metropolitan area.
The Wimbledon opening forms part of Primark’s 40th year in the capital, with the retailer stating Wimbledon has long been on its customers’ wish list. Further details will be shared closer to opening, according to the company.
