Coffee shop chain Pret A Manger has announced a price hike for its monthly coffee subscription.
The subscription, which launched to immediate success in September 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, will be rebranded to ‘Club Pret’ and see its monthly asking price increased by 20 per cent to £30 at a time when food and non-alcoholic drink inflation is far outpacing overall consumer price inflation.
The scheme initially launched at £20 per month, and was increased to £25 per month in February 2022.
As part of the rebrand, Pret is also adding to the service. Customers will still be able to get up to five barista-prepared drinks per day, but Pret said that the membership will also include a 10 per cent discount on all food and any additionally purchased drinks.
Pret said that the subscription service is used 1.25 million times per week in the UK across its 439 stores in the country, with its success leading to subsequent roll outs in the US and France. The company has not disclosed its overall subscriber numbers.
Pano Christou, chief executive at Pret A Manger, described the price raise as not an extra encumbrance for consumers but rather said that the expansion is a reward for their loyalty. He said: “It’s now time that we give back to our most loyal customers, expanding the Subscription and making our freshly made food, snacks and organic coffee, more accessible to the people who have been crucial to Pret’s success.”
