Poundland pauses store closures as retailer focuses on recovery and pricing overhaul

Poundland has placed 11 planned store closures on hold, following the execution of its restructuring and recovery plan.

The discount retailer, which initially marked 68 sites for closure after its acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers, has already shut 57 shops. The remaining closures have now been paused, with the company stating that these stores will continue trading until their leases expire.

The decision to halt the closures comes after a vote by creditors, including landlords, on the restructure plan in August. Notably, the Irvine Rivergate Centre branch, which had closed on 14 September, has reopened after restocking. Stores in Brighton’s London Road and Anniesland’s Great Western Road are also among those set to remain open for the time being. In Whitby, a proposed closure was reversed after Poundland reached an agreement with the landlord.

Despite the pause, Poundland maintains its expectation that the overall estate will shrink from around 800 stores to between 650 and 700 as more leases expire. The retailer confirmed that six stores are still scheduled to close on 28 September in locations including Glasgow, Havant, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Swanley and Uttoxeter.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams commented on the company’s direction, saying, “We’re determined to deliver a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value to customers. We appreciate the support we’ve had from suppliers, landlords and other partners who’ve now all been fully briefed on our plans to get us back on track. While there is much work to do, I’m confident that a Poundland focused on the simple value our customers expect, has a bright future.”

The retailer has also completed the rollout of a new pricing structure, returning to pound shop basics with £1, £2 and £3 price points across grocery and other categories. By the end of the month, around 60 per cent of grocery items will be priced at £1, with the remainder at £2 or £3. Williams said the move is designed to make value more visible to customers and simplify the shopping experience.

In addition, Poundland has converted its website from a transactional platform to a brand site and is retiring its Perks loyalty app. Customers with vouchers in the app can redeem them in store until 15 January 2026.

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
