Matalan looking to hire e-commerce expertise

Matalan is making moves to build its internal e-commerce team and move away from using external consultants.

The clothing and homeware retailer’s e-commerce director Paul Hornby said he is looking for a new e-commerce delivery lead, user experience (UX) lead, quality assurance (QA) engineer and business analyst.

This was due to a process of “consciously uncoupling” with Equal Experts, a network of agile software consultants that Matalan has been working with for around a year.

Hornby has been in his role for 18 months, helping to establish a UX Lab at the head office in Knowsley. Online sales at Matalan grew by 31 per cent year-on-year in the 12 months to 23 February.

“Even though it feels like we’ve made huge progress, and we have, we’re only just at the start of the journey and are ambitious to do so much more in the months and years ahead as we invest and grow our in-house capability to allow us to just that,” he commented.

“We’ll be consciously uncoupling from Equal Experts soon as we want to continue this journey with our own full-time permanent talent."

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
