Matalan has announced it will upgrade a further 10 stores following a successful first phase of its refurbishment programme.
The fashion retailer said that its recently refurbished stores have seen footfall rise significantly since reopening, outperforming non-refurbished stores by 14 per cent in terms of sales.
The move comes after Matalan announced in June that it would invest £25 million in upgrading 30 stores and improving its digital offering.
Updates to the stores include simplified layouts with clearer signage, brighter interiors lit by LED lighting, and new concession partnerships with brands including Little Mistress and Quiz.
Additionally, Matalan said it plans to roll out new self-service tills early next year, which it said will enable faster transactions and an improved checkout experience.
Matalan said that in some locations, sales have increased by 20 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, adding that customer satisfaction scores have improved following the upgrades.
“Whether it’s brighter interiors, faster tills or a nicer experience parking your car, we’re listening and investing in what matters most to our customers,” said Katherine Davis, chief retail officer at Matalan. “The results speak for themselves – higher footfall, happier shoppers and even more compelling reasons to visit your local Matalan.”
Elsewhere, Matalan has announced the appointment of Steve Ridehalgh as director of international.
Reporting to Davis, Ridehalgh will be responsible for Matalan’s international growth strategy as part of the second phase of Matalan’s turnaround.
Ridehalgh, who has extensive experience in the retail industry, was responsible for the global expansion of Oasis and Warehouse.
