Amazon to pay customers for external shopping data

Amazon has started paying customers for data on purchases made outside of its online and offline stores.

The Amazon Shopper Panel launched in the US this week, with $10 put towards the Amazon balance of those sharing their receipts.

Those involved in the trial will be asked to take pictures of 10 paper receipts, or forward email receipts, per month for purchases made anywhere other than Amazon’s own stores - including Whole Foods, Amazon Four Star, Amazon Go, Amazon Books or the e-commerce site.

The new app will also encourage users to complete short surveys about the brands and products they are interested in for a chance to earn extra rewards every month.

The programme is currently opt-in and invite only, but interested users can download the app and join a waiting list.

The move is part of Amazon’s aim of improving support for its growing ranks of third-party sellers. It promised to delete any sensitive data gained from the receipts, but will keep wider personal data to improve product selection and advertising on its platform.
