eBay acquires AI firm to identify counterfeit goods

eBay has purchased AI-based marketplace for compliance technology 3PM Shield for an undisclosed sum.

eBay said that it will use 3PM Shield’s technology to prevent the sale of fake items, unsafe products and illegal goods, as well as help the retail firm tackle suspicious or harmful seller behaviour.

Commenting on the news Zhi Zhou, chief risk officer at eBay, said: "It is a top priority to help ensure that eBay remains a safe and trusted environment for our global community of sellers and buyers, particularly to prevent counterfeits and unsafe or illegal products."

Zhou said that 3PM Shield, which eBay has an existing partnership with, has already helped the company address issues around identifying fake and dangerous items.

The news comes after eBay was identified as one four online marketplaces to be selling poorly made electric blankets which should not be sold in the UK, according to a recent investigation by Which?

This follows the announcement that eBay is to cut 500 jobs, or around four per cent of its workforce.
