Spar installs real-time discounting app

Spar has partnered with the Gander app and Henderson Technology to provide customers with live price updates on soon-to-be out of date items in over 270 of its convenience stores.

Using Henderson’s EDGEPos system, Gander will post products nearing their sell-by-date as soon as they are stickered in store, updating the list as items are sold in real-time.

Customers can also track certain products in the app, receiving updates as and when they are reduced to clear, informing them how many of the discounted item is left in store. As well as engaging consumers, the system helps reduce food wastage.

“The store teams are really engaged with it and the shoppers are getting it,” commented Darren Nickels, chief executive at Henderson.

“I know Gander is in discussions with many others to do this and I know many are watching to see how this goes,” he added. “If it is to be successful, it has to become a standard way of shopping across all outlets, because that’s how shoppers will come back to it again.”

The app is currently live in stores operating under the Spar, Eurospar, Vivo, Vivoxtra, Calver, Sleaford, Nefyn and Abersoch brands across the UK.

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
