PayPal and Venmo to support Apple Tap to Pay

PayPal and Venmo apps on iOS are set to add support for Apple's Tap to Pay on iPhone functionality.

While not officially announced by Apple, MacRumors spotted a line in PayPal’s latest earnings release where it confirmed the additions.

It said: “Leveraging Apple's Tap to Pay on iPhone technology, US merchant customers will soon be able to accept contactless debit or credit cards and mobile wallets, including Apple Pay, using an iPhone and the PayPal or Venmo iOS app.”

Apple Tap to Pay, introduced earlier this year, allows merchants to accept payments on iPhone XS or later from iPhone, Apple Watch, contactless card or other digital wallets without the need for additional hardware such as a third-party card reader.

To date it has only been made available in the US, with the likes of Square, Stripe and Adyen all adding support. It has seen adoption from small and independent retailer, with the option serving to cut costs on expensive POS hardware.

Apple has not indicated if or when it plans to roll Tap to Pay out internationally.
