Matalan app drives digital growth with 1.76 million downloads

Matalan has reported strong early performance from its first fully native mobile app, with 1.76 million downloads since its launch in August.

The fashion and homeware retailer said monthly active users have increased by 10 per cent month-on-month since launch, while app orders rose 20 per cent year-on-year in August and 28 per cent in September.

The app has also exceeded the retailer's conversion target, reaching 4.4 per cent compared with its goal of 3.4 per cent. Average order values are 14 per cent higher than those placed through Matalan's website.

The results build on wider digital momentum for the retailer, which reported 10 per cent growth in online sales during its 2026 financial year.

Developed with mobile technology partner Apadmi, Matalan said the app has been designed to provide a more personalised shopping experience. Features include intelligent product search, richer product information, Apple Pay and Google Pay integration, and access to Matalan Me loyalty rewards and personalised offers.

The retailer has also introduced an in-store barcode scanning feature, enabling customers to view product details, availability and reviews on their smartphones while shopping in stores.

Dre Nicolaides, digital director at Matalan, said: “What's particularly encouraging about the response to our new app is that customers aren't just downloading it – they're using it to shop, and we're seeing that translate into stronger orders and conversion. It's a really positive start and reflects the investment we've made in improving the digital experience.

“We've focused on making it easier and more enjoyable to shop Matalan, whether customers are shopping online or checking product information in store. The investment we've made in the technology also means we can keep introducing new features and responding more quickly to what customers want.”

Nicolaides added that the retailer sees “significant potential” to grow its digital business, with the app expected to play a central role in future developments.

The app’s success builds on what the retailer called in March its “significant” progress since 2024 and is part of a wider £25 million turnaround effort.
