M&S named UK’s favourite supermarket by Which?

Marks & Spencer has been crowned the nation’s best in-store supermarket, according to new Which? research.

The annual satisfaction survey asked more than 3,000 people about their brick-and-mortar shopping experiences at the UK's largest supermarkets. The survey looks at a number of factors including store appearance, product range, and value for money.

M&S was the highest-scoring in-store supermarket for 2022 with a 78 per cent customer score, received five stars for store appearance, customer service and the quality of its own brand and fresh products.

Aldi, which was last year’s favourite, only just missed out on winning the top spot again – with a 77 per cent customer score. It was the only supermarket to get the full five stars for value for money.

Waitrose had a 75 per cent customer score - scoring full marks for the appearance of its stores, helpfulness of staff, short queues, and the quality of its fresh produce.

The Big Four supermarkets were all in the bottom half of the table - with Tesco scoring 70 per cent, Sainsbury's 68 per cent, Asda 67 per cent, and Morrisons at 67 per cent.

Co-op was bottom of the list for the second year running, with a 61 per cent customer score. Customers told Which? it was ‘expensive’, ‘always crowded’ and had ‘long queues at checkout’.

Online supermarkets

Iceland was the most popular when it came to online shopping - achieving a 76 per cent customer score. It received five-star availability of delivery slots and how easy its website or app was to use.

Joint second came Tesco and Ocado, each with a 74 per cent score. Ocado was the only supermarket to get the full five stars for its product range.

“Shoppers have chosen M&S as their favourite supermarket for a great in-store shopping experience and quality products,” said Harry Rose, Which? magazine editor. “But with the cost of living continuing to rise, many people are looking for quality at the cheapest possible price, and this is reflected by a strong showing in our research for some of the least expensive supermarkets.”
