Louis Vuitton opens first 3D-printed pop-up store

Luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton has opened what is believed to the world’s first 3D-printed pop-up retail store.

The outlet is based in Sydney’s Westfield shopping centre and is showcasing the retailer’s latest menswear collection. It will be open to shoppers in the Australian capital until 18 December.

The structure – which measures 9m wide, 10m long and 2.7m high, was created by 3D print provider OMUS in 18 days using two Massivit 1800 3D printers, which produced the 30 panels needed to construct the shop. The display was then finished in chrome mirror self-adhesive vinyl, featuring Louis Vuitton-designed animal prints matching the theme of the menswear collection.

OMUS worked with Louis Vuitton’s design agency, Gold Coast Displays, to produce the “statement megastructure”. Robert Grosso, co-owner of OMUS, explained: “Having received the design brief, we essentially needed to produce a visually stunning, structurally sound outlet that could endure sustained use in a busy public environment – and in record time.

“Given the complexity of the design and the short turnaround time, 3D printing was really the only viable production method available to us,” he continued. “Their staff are also happy to explain to visitors how 3D printing was pivotal to the project and how it encapsulates Louis Vuitton’s innovation and fresh-thinking attitude.”
