Iceland boosts online delivery operations to meet demand

Iceland is increasing its online delivery operations to meet an almost 500 per cent increase in demand across some stores.

Its Food Warehouse branches, which are typically two or three times larger than a standard Iceland store, stocking a wider range of goods, are now being brought online for home delivery at an accelerated rate.

More than 120 Food Warehouse stores will now help fulfil the rising number of online orders since the UK lockdown began last month. This will lead to a 250 per cent increase in Iceland’s delivery capacity, reported The Grocer.

Iceland was in the process of bringing its larger stores online before the Coronavirus struck, but is now ramping this effort up to ensure it can meet demand.

It has hired 1,100 extra delivery drivers and 3,200 new store assistants to help with picking online orders, while partnering with delivery fleets from other companies which have seen activity reduce during the pandemic.
