Greggs to downsize factories and axe 740 manufacturing jobs

Greggs has announced plans to close and consolidate several of its manufacturing sites around the country, citing a need for more efficient operations.

The bakery chain announced plans to close its manufacturing sites in Enfield, North Lakes in Cumbria, Pettigrews in Kelso, Scotland and Seaham in County Durham. It will also cease manufacturing operations at Treforest in Wales, with the site set to continue operations as a distribution centre.

Together, it predicts the closures will save it £20 million in annual pre-tax operating costs across the 2028 and 2029 financial years.

Greggs said that the move could result in approximately 740 redundancies over the next two and a half years and that it will enter a consultation period with trade unions and employee representatives to refine the proposals.

It added that it expects the plans to cost £60 million, with £40 million from capital expenditure and the rest from redundancy payments and operational disruption costs.

Greggs added that owning its own manufacturing and logistics network is still important to its business model and will still operate sites in Balliol, Clydesmill, Derby, Gosforth, Leeds, and Manchester.

It will also continue to run distribution operations from its Enfield site.

Roisin Currie, chief executive of Greggs, said: “Greggs is a strong and growing business, and we continue to invest significantly in our future. To continue building a successful business for the future, we must keep evolving alongside changing customer expectations. We want to ensure Greggs remains a strong, sustainable business for decades to come.

“Greggs manufacturing and logistics network remains a key strength of the business, and these proposals are intended to strengthen our manufacturing network, improve efficiency and ensure we remain well placed for the future while continuing to deliver the quality, value and service our customers expect.”

The announcement came alongside Greggs’s third quarter earnings statement, in which the bakery chain reported a 7.7 per cent rise in sales for the 13 weeks to 26 September 2026.

Greggs employs approximately 33,000 people across the UK and in July committed to expanding its estate to 3,500 stores by the mid-2030s.
