Digital commerce surges by 91% in 2020

In the UK, digital commerce has increased by 91 per cent in the past year, with the pandemic and resultant lockdowns boosting the industry.

Research shows that global shopper spending increased by 31 per cent, while digital traffic jumped by 27 per cent.

Salesforce’s Shopping Index, which drew on data from over one billion shoppers, revealed that mobile usage is on the rise, with digital traffic on devices increasing ahead of computers, while order traffic has more than doubled worldwide on mobiles.

In the UK specifically, 70 per cent of orders were placed on a mobile device.

The Index shows that global average spend is up from 2020. On average consumers' net average spend increased across 2020, but this was due in part to a significant peak in quarter two which gradually fell.
