Carrefour Belgium has opened its third AI-powered BuyBye store at the NATO SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) base in Casteau, near Mons, Belgium.
The new store uses AI-powered autonomous “grab-and-go” technology which allows customers to buy products without checking out, with items being charged automatically.
The store's technology is equipped with artificial vision cameras and weight sensors to track inventory in real time.
The new store offers over 250 essential products, including breakfast options with fresh fruit, lunch, dinner and personal care items, available 24/7 and supplied by the Carrefour Market Casteau team.
Supported product lines include fresh produce, pre-packaged foods, fresh baked goods and refrigerated products.
The store joins the list of Carrefour Belgium stores following the autonomous micro-store concept, a model that has been developed in collaboration with Portuguese software company Reckon.AI.
In a LinkedIn post, Ana Pinto, chief executive officer at Reckon.ai, commented on the partnership: "Very proud of the incredible work of both teams, and it shows the growth and trust of big companies on our technology and team. Unattended has never been easier."
The first Carrefour BuyBye was opened in December 2023 near Carrefour Belgium’s headquarters in Zaventem.
“To open our minds, we often surround ourselves with start-ups like Reckon.ai, because in fact, they have an agility and ease of developing technologies that we do not necessarily have in our company,” said Arnaud Lesne, director of innovation and partnerships at Carrefour Belgium on the retailer's website.
On Friday, Reckon AI announced that its technology has officially been granted a European patent recognising the company's smart autonomous solutions for the retail sector.
