Hard-to-recycle scheme kicks in at Boots

More Boots customers can get rewarded for recycling their empties in-store, with the Recycle at Boots scheme now available in 700 shops.

The scheme encourages customers to bring back empty “hard-to-recycle” products, such as empty toothpaste tubes.

Customers are rewarded with 250 Boots Advantage Card Points (worth £2.50) for every five products deposited.

During a trial across 50 stores, customers dropped off more than 500,000 items.

The top recycled products in the trial were toothpaste, mascara and hand wash, with Colgate, No7 and Boots the most recycled brands.

Lucy Reynolds, director of communications and CSR at Boots UK, said: “The reaction from our customers so far has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve listened to their feedback and as a result are rolling out the scheme further, making it easier than ever for them to recycle empty products that would usually go to landfill.”

Reynolds added: “From old mascaras and toothpaste tubes to finished lipsticks and empty vitamin pots, customers can feel even better about treating themselves with their Boots Advantage Card points, knowing that their products can be recycled.”

Using “first-to-market” Scan2Recycle technology, empty products are sent to Boots’ recycling partner MYGroup, where they are then transformed into new items such as reusable storage containers that are now being used at Boots warehouses.

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
