Samsung and Visa to launch NFC phone

Visa Europe is in talks with UK operators to launch an NFC-enabled smartphone with Samsung in time for the 2012 Olympics. The companies, who are both sponsors of the Games, say the mobile phone will have Olympic-themed content, as well as being capable of mobile payments.

The smartphone allows users to make mobile payments via an app embedded on the device that communicates with compatible tills via NFC and lets them view their transaction history.

It is expected to be available from the first half of next year.

Sandra Alzetta, Visa Europe’s head of innovation and new product development, said the app will also let users pay for both small and large purchases and will also have optional PIN protection.
