Google+ opens its doors to the public

Google+ is now open for anyone to join after the internet search giant launched its social network on beta this summer. Google invited journalists and technology specialists to sign up in June, others could then join the network on an invitation-only basis.

Vic Gundotra, senior VP of engineering at Google, blogged: “For the past 12 weeks we’ve been in field trial, and during that time we’ve listened and learned a great deal. We’re nowhere near done, but with the improvements we’ve made so far, we’re ready to move from field trial to beta, and introduce our 100th feature: open signups. This way anyone can visit google.com/+.”

In the first three weeks of launch, it went on to clock up 20 million unique users via the invitation-only technique, according to ComScore. Google has since confirmed that the site has over 25 million people signed up.
