E-tailers plan mobile payments rollout

Research conducted by WorldPay shows that customer demand is driving online retailers towards offering m-commerce transactions. Many e-tailers say they plan to implement mobile payments over the next one-two years.

The research, carried out with 109 senior managers at the Internet Retailing Conference in London, reveals that at present, only 29 per cent of businesses offer m-commerce solutions for customer payments. Of those polled, 80 per cent revealed plans to add mobile offerings in the next 24 months, and a further 14 per cent said they were likely to roll out this channel in three-four years.

Sixty per cent of respondents felt the greatest driver for offering m-commerce stemmed from customer expectation. While 10 per cent said they would only be likely to extend their platforms to m-commerce in order to ‘keep up’ with competitors and a further 11 per cent said they would upgrade because modern technology makes mobile transactions possible.

Challenges to the successful adoption of m-commerce solutions included; technological capability, data security, risk of fraud, the cost of processing the payment and the overall payment process.

Previous research conducted by WorldPay found that 39 per cent of smartphone shoppers are frustrated by the length of time it takes to complete mobile transaction.
