Sainsbury's trial iPad docks for trolleys

A Sainsbury’s store in west London is piloting a shopping trolley with built in iPad dock, so customers can surf the web as they browse the shelves. The trolleys come complete with a tilting iPad holder and speakers customers can shop while listening to music or watching videos.

If you think this sounds like an accident waiting to happen then fear not. The trolleys have also been kitted out with a front bumper equipped with sensors to alert engrossed shoppers of their proximity to other customers and obstacles.

A solar-powered battery on the trolley powers the sensors and keeps the iPad charged. They are currently being trialled at Sainsbury's in Cromwell Road, Kensington, but there are no plans for a nationwide rollout just yet.
