Retailers are being offered the chance to develop their own apps by Midlands based software company, Infonote. Over half (55 per cent) of all new mobile phones purchased this year were smartphones and research suggests that over half of the UK will be smartphone users by 2012.

Yet a recent survey found that only 11 per cent of major clothing retailers currently have their own mobile app.

Infonote’s MD, Peter Whelan, believes that retailers need to address the apps issue sooner rather than later. “Apps used to be considered relevant only to teenagers and young people, but they have an increasingly crucial role to play in business,” he comments. “In fact, mobile phone apps have the potential to open up a series of great benefits for both retailers and their customers.”

Many of the most popular apps not only allow users access a company’s website, but also allow them access to insider information and exclusive offers.

“We are not alone in predicting that apps will soon be like the internet – every business will have one,” adds Pete. “It’s just a question of getting around to it ‘one day’. The good news is that apps take far less time to develop and cost much less than most people imagine. By making the process quick and simple, we hope that the ‘one day’ will be sooner than people think.”
