Debenhams is in talks to introduce m-payments as research finds handsets will become common as a way of paying by 2016. The High Street retailer said it is exploring ways to let customers use their mobiles to pay for goods in-store.
Harriet Williams, Debenhams’ head of digital, said, ”It is something we are looking at and talking to partners about. When we’ve done research, we’ve seen that it’s something particularly younger customers are more interested in.”

Williams said the department store chain would “love” to run a trial next year, but that banks and mobile operators need to work together.
Research by PayPal said that 2016 will be the year UK shoppers use their mobiles to pay for their shopping, increasingly replacing cash and cards. Robin Terrell, House of Fraser executive director of multi-channel and international, said m-payments will “absolutely” be introduced in the future.
However, retailers have voiced their concerns over the difficulties in ensuring all the various players work together on NFC technology.
