Ikea to open 10 compact stores in France as part of omnichannel strategy

Ingka Group has announced plans to open 10 new compact-format Ikea stores across France by 2030 as part of a wider push to expand its omnichannel presence and bring its products closer to customers.

The move forms part of Ingka Group's plans to increase accessibility through smaller store formats located in towns and suburban retail parks to complement its traditional large stores.

Ingka Group, which is the largest Ikea retailer accounting for around 87 per cent of Ikea sales, has already opened its first compact store in Limoges and plans to launch a second location in Le Mans.

At around 3,000 square metres, the compact stores are roughly a tenth of the size of a traditional Ikea store. Despite their smaller footprint, Ingka Group said they stock more than a quarter of the retailer's product range for immediate collection and provide access to the wider assortment through digital ordering.

The new format follows trials in the UK, Poland and the US, where Ikea has tested smaller stores designed to serve customers in areas that do not have a full-sized outlet.

Ingka Group said it designed the format to open more quickly than traditional stores and plans to place many of the locations in retail parks where customers already visit for their regular shopping.

The expansion supports Ingka Group's broader investment in its retail network as it looks to strengthen its omnichannel proposition and integrate physical stores more closely with digital shopping journeys.

Its French rollout forms part of Ingka Group's wider €5 billion investment programme, which aims to open new locations and upgrade existing stores across its 32 markets over a three-year period.

In France, Ikea has committed an additional €35 million in investment between 2026 and 2030 alongside previously announced spending plans.

"Having our recognisable home furnishing products within easy reach will hopefully make a real difference for many people,” said Javier Quinones, global commercial manager at Ingka Group. “Knowing that for some of them this will be their first
Ikea experience is incredibly exciting."

In March this year, Ingka Group announced plans to expand its network of smaller stores across Europe and North America. The expansion is part of its strategy to become more accessible, affordable and sustainable by targeting areas where it does not currently have a presence
