Barcelona shopkeepers call for crackdown on cannabis shops ‘posing as florists’

Shopkeepers in Barcelona are reportedly disgruntled over a rise in cannabis-selling shops ‘posing as florists’.

As reported by the Guardian, around 118 ‘florists’ have opened in Ciutat Vella, an area in the Spanish city popular with tourists, within the last six years.

However, the Barcelona’s florists’ association says it is unaware of any boom in sales of flowers throughout the city, stating that the number of florists in Barcelona has remained stable for years.

Shopkeeper’s association Barna Centre has reportedly called on the local authority to introduce a specific licence for weed shops to stop them masquerading as florists, claiming that the shops, many of which have taken the place of other businesses which were forced to close during the pandemic, tarnish the city’s image.

It is estimated that Barcelona has around 250 ‘headshops’ selling cannabis-related products including sweets and smoking paraphernalia with illegal concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive substance in marijuana which produces a high.
