Written by Chris Lemmon
Tesco has published its trading update for the first quarter of 2017, revealing steady online growth and UK like-for-like sales growth of one per cent.
Online grocery sales saw strong growth of 4.8 per cent, while the retail giant also recently introduced a monthly Delivery Saver subscription option to offer greater flexibility to its customers.
Total group like-for-like sales were up one per cent, while the UK saw 1.3 per cent growth in customer transactions – totalling 10 million more than last year. Tesco saw particularly strong volume growth in fresh food sales at 1.6 per cent, marking significant market outperformance.
Dave Lewis, chief executive at Tesco, said: ““In tough market conditions, we have stayed true to our commitment to helping customers – working closely with our supplier partners to keep prices low. Customers have responded by doing more of their shopping with us and as a result we continue to grow volumes, particularly in fresh food.
“This is a good start to the year, with our sixth consecutive quarter of positive like-for-like sales growth across the Group. We are confident in our plans to create long-term, sustainable value for our key stakeholders and to deliver on the ambitions we have set out.”
