Morrisons to offer online shopping

Morrisons is going into business with internet grocer Ocado. The supermarket chain says it has agreed a deal that will enable it to launch an online grocery service by January 2014.

The delivery vans will carry the Morrisons brand, with logistical support by Ocado from its Dordon distribution centre in the Midlands. Morrisons will make an initial payment of £170 million to Ocado to acquire the Dordon centre, then a further £46 million to expand it and establish a delivery network.

Tim Steiner, chief executive officer of Ocado, insists that the deal with Morrisons would not jeopardise its agreement with Waitrose. “We will continue to source products under our long-term agreement with Waitrose, and our customers will continue to benefit from the existing high levels of service, wide range of products and competitive prices that they currently enjoy,” Steiner says.
